The UCLA rule that saves the most money
Do not assume a countertop appliance is allowed. UCLA lists coffee makers, hot-water dispensers, toasters, toaster ovens, freestanding microwaves, open-coil appliances, and several other heat-producing items among things not permitted in rooms or buildings.

UCLA says one mini-fridge is allowed per room, and students may bring or rent one. Decide with roommates who is responsible before anyone buys it. A separate microwave is not allowed because of limited electrical capacity.
Pack light for a late-September move-in
UCLA's 2026 move-in guidance says schedules are sent in late summer and encourages students to pack light. Keep check-in materials, bedding, medication, chargers, and shower gear accessible rather than buried in boxes.

In addition to the obvious fire hazards, leave these off the shopping list unless UCLA updates its policy.

- Freestanding microwaves
- Toasters and toaster ovens
- Halogen lamps
- Space heaters and air-conditioning units
- Materials for lofting the supplied bed
What is still worth packing
